Choosing a Cabinet: Walkways, Fire-Rated Walls and Locks

The three cabinet types above differ in how far they stand out from the wall, and that decides where each one can go.

The 4-Inch Rule for Walkways

In a corridor or other walkway, an object whose leading edge is more than 27 and not more than 80 inches above the floor may stick out no more than 4 inches from the wall (2010 ADA Standards Section 307.2; California Building Code Section 11B-307.2). A surface-mounted cabinet usually sticks out more than that, so corridors, lobbies and stairwells usually call for a semi-recessed or fully recessed cabinet.

Fire-Rated Walls

Where a wall must have a fire-resistance rating, a recessed cabinet has to be installed so the wall keeps its rating (California Building Code Section 714.4.2). That usually means a fire-rated cabinet. Your architect or fire authority confirms which walls are rated.

Locked Cabinets

Extinguisher cabinets may not be locked. Where extinguishers are at risk of misuse, a locked cabinet is allowed if it has a means of emergency access, such as a break-glass panel, and your fire authority approves it (Title 19 Section 567.2).

Closed Cabinets in Hot Places

Where extinguishers sit in closed cabinets exposed to high temperatures, the cabinets need screened openings and drains (Title 19 Section 567.7).

Mounting Height

For an extinguisher of 40 lbs gross weight or less, the top must not exceed 5 feet (60 inches) above the finished floor (CCR Title 19 § 567.6; City of Los Angeles: LAMC § 57.906.2.5). Over 40 lbs, except for wheeled types, the top must not exceed 3.5 feet (42 inches). The bottom of any portable fire extinguisher must remain at least 4 inches above the floor. Full placement and travel-distance rules are on our Fire Extinguisher Services page.

We install surface-mount cabinets. Semi-recessed and fully recessed cabinets go into a wall opening, so we supply them and your contractor installs them.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you install recessed fire extinguisher cabinets?

We supply semi-recessed and fully recessed Potter Roemer cabinets, and your contractor installs them, because they go into a wall opening. We install surface-mount cabinets ourselves.

What is the 4-inch rule for fire extinguisher cabinets?

In a corridor or other walkway, a cabinet whose leading edge is more than 27 and not more than 80 inches above the floor may stick out no more than 4 inches from the wall (2010 ADA Standards Section 307.2; California Building Code Section 11B-307.2). Semi-recessed and fully recessed cabinets are the usual answer.

Can a fire extinguisher cabinet be locked?

Only where extinguishers are at risk of misuse, and then the cabinet needs a means of emergency access, such as a break-glass panel, and your fire authority's approval (Title 19 Section 567.2).

Do I need a fire-rated cabinet?

If the cabinet is recessed into a wall that must have a fire-resistance rating, it has to be installed so the wall keeps that rating (California Building Code Section 714.4.2), which usually means a fire-rated cabinet. Your architect or fire authority confirms which walls are rated.

Do cabinets in hot locations need anything special?

Yes. Where extinguishers sit in closed cabinets exposed to high temperatures, the cabinets need screened openings and drains (Title 19 Section 567.7).

SOS Fire Services did an amazing job servicing all of the fire extinguishers at liquor store in West Hollywood. They were extremely fast, professional, and courteous from start to finish. They took the time to explain everything needed to know to stay in compliance with fire safety requirements. Really appreciated how knowledgeable and thorough they were throughout the entire service. Their pricing was also very fair and reasonable, especially considering the quality of service. It is clear that they take their work and their customers seriously. Will definitely be using SOS Fire Services as my ongoing fire service company. Highly recommended!

We hired SOS Fire Services for our annual fire extinguisher inspection at our business and the experience was seamless. Ashley was great in scheduling and very responsive to our questions. The technician, Juan, arrived right on time and was well prepared and very efficient in completing the necessary tasks. He didn't just swap the tags; he took the time to explain that two of our units were due for their 6-year maintenance and handled it on-site without any mess. Per our request, he also installed an additional unit with no issues. After the work was completed, they promptly provided all the related documentation for submission to our insurance company. No hidden fees and very fair pricing. Highly recommend them to any local business needing to stay compliant.
