Which Fire Extinguisher Does Your Business Need?

Start with the hazard, not the extinguisher. The California Fire Code requires portable extinguishers in almost every commercial building, apartment building and school, and adds units for kitchens, flammable liquids and special-hazard rooms.

Which Fire Extinguisher Does Your Business Need?
AreaOffices, retail, classrooms, lobbiesWhat California requiresA Class A extinguisher rated at least 2-A within 75 feet of travel from any pointWhat we usually supplyABC dry chemical, usually 5 lb or 10 lb
AreaCommercial kitchensWhat California requiresA Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of the cooking equipment. One 1.5-gallon (6 L) Class K covers up to four fryers that hold up to 80 lb of oil eachWhat we usually supplyClass K wet chemical, plus ABC units for the rest of the kitchen
AreaGarages, workshops, fuel and paint storageWhat California requiresA Class B rating sized to the hazard, for example 10-B within 30 feet or 20-B within 50 feet in an ordinary-hazard areaWhat we usually supplyABC or Purple K dry chemical
AreaServer rooms, electrical rooms, labsWhat California requiresAdditional units where your fire department requires themWhat we usually supplyCO2 or Halotron clean agent, which leave no powder on equipment
AreaWarehouses and storageWhat California requiresThe same 75-foot rule, with higher ratings as the hazard rises: at least 4-A in extra-hazard areasWhat we usually supply10 lb and 20 lb ABC; wheeled units for large open areas
AreaApartment buildingsWhat California requiresIf every apartment has its own extinguisher rated at least 1-A:10-B:C, building units are needed only in the other locations the code lists, such as near commercial cooking and flammable liquidsWhat we usually supply5 lb ABC in hallways, stairwells, lobbies and garage entries
AreaForklifts and vehiclesWhat California requiresIn forklift storage areas, the fire department may accept a 10-pound 40-A:80-B:C extinguisher on each vehicle in place of wall unitsWhat we usually supplyVehicle-Rated Brackets

Your fire department, the authority having jurisdiction, can require more than this table shows. We confirm the list on site before you buy.

What's Included When You Buy From SOS

Buying from a licensed extinguisher company is different from ordering a box online. Every order includes:

  1. A free site walk to map the hazards, the floor area and the walking distance to each unit.
  2. A list of units for each location: type, size and rating.
  3. Delivery to your site.
  4. Mounting on the right bracket or in a cabinet, at code height.
  5. A State Fire Marshal tag on each new unit, dated and marked as a new extinguisher, plus location signs where they are needed.
  6. A record of every unit and its location, and a reminder when the first annual service is due.

How Many Fire Extinguishers Does Your Business Need in California?

Enough that nobody is more than 75 feet of travel from a Class A extinguisher, with enough total rating for the floor area, plus extra units for kitchens, flammable liquids and special-hazard rooms. The California Fire Code sets the numbers:

How Many Fire Extinguishers Does Your Business Need in California?
Hazard levelLight (low)Smallest extinguisher allowed2-AFloor area per "A" of rating3,000 sq ftMost area one extinguisher can cover11,250 sq ftLongest walk to an extinguisher75 feet
Hazard levelOrdinary (moderate)Smallest extinguisher allowed2-AFloor area per "A" of rating1,500 sq ftMost area one extinguisher can cover11,250 sq ftLongest walk to an extinguisher75 feet
Hazard levelExtra (high)Smallest extinguisher allowed4-AFloor area per "A" of rating1,000 sq ftMost area one extinguisher can cover11,250 sq ftLongest walk to an extinguisher75 feet

Source: California Fire Code 2025, Table 906.3(1). California's Title 19 sets how the floor-area limits are applied.

How we count:

  1. Set the hazard level of each area. Your fire department makes the final call.
  2. Divide the floor area by what one extinguisher covers: its "A" number times the area per A, never more than 11,250 sq ft.
  3. Walk the floor. Walls, racks and closed doors often mean an extra unit to keep every point within 75 feet.
  4. Add the hazard units: Class K near fryers, Class B near flammable liquids, and units for special-hazard rooms.

Example

A 9,000 sq ft single-floor office is light hazard. A 2-A:10-B:C extinguisher covers 2 × 3,000 = 6,000 sq ft, so the office needs at least two. If any desk is more than 75 feet of travel from the nearest one, it needs a third.

Use this as a starting point. We do the count on site and give you the list before you buy.

What California Requires of an Extinguisher You Buy

Every portable extinguisher sold in California must meet State Fire Marshal standards and carry the label of UL or another laboratory the State Fire Marshal approves (Health and Safety Code §13162).

Only a business licensed by the State Fire Marshal may service, recharge or test extinguishers for a fee (Health and Safety Code §13163). SOS holds licence #E2390.

Rechargeable extinguishers with metal valves can be inspected, recharged and tested for many years. Disposable units cannot be recharged and are replaced after any use.

Already bought extinguishers? We can inspect, mount and tag them if they are listed, rechargeable and in serviceable condition.

Brands We Sell and Service

SOS sells, inspects, maintains, repairs and services all types and brands of fire extinguishers, including Amerex, Buckeye, Ansul, Pyro-Chem, Badger, Kidde, First Alert and more. Some of the commercial lines we supply:

Amerex Corporation

Multi-purpose dry chemical, Class K wet chemical, Halotron I, and water mist extinguishers.

Buckeye Fire Equipment

High-flow ABC dry chemical, purple-K, and carbon dioxide cylinders.

Badger Fire Protection

Commercial stored-pressure and clean agent units.

Ansul Sentry

Industrial dry chemical and specialized hazard extinguishers.

For Contractors and Public Agencies

Contractors

California requires fire extinguishers on each floor of a building under construction (California Fire Code §906.1). We deliver and mount units for job sites and new tenant spaces, and tag the permanent units before final inspection.

Public agencies and procurement

SOS is a certified Small Business (#2022246), an SBE/DBE certified by LA Metro, and a Woman-Owned Small Business (WOSB and EDWOSB). We are registered in SAM.gov, listed under NIGP codes 34028 (Fire Extinguishers) and 34008 (Fire Protection Equipment Accessories and Supplies), and can provide certified payroll.

What Affects the Price

Every quote is per location, after the site walk. The price depends on:

the type and agent (ABC, CO2, Class K, clean agent),
the size and rating each area needs,
bracket, cabinet or floor stand,
how many units and how many sites (volume pricing from 10 units),
the wall (drywall, block, tile or recessed) and the signs needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I buy any fire extinguisher for my business in California?

Only one that meets State Fire Marshal standards and carries the label of UL or another laboratory the State Fire Marshal approves (Health and Safety Code §13162). For a business, choose a rechargeable unit rated for the hazard and mount it at code height.

Will you inspect and tag extinguishers we bought somewhere else?

Yes, if they are listed, rechargeable and in serviceable condition. We inspect each unit, mount it at code height and tag it. Units that fail are listed for replacement.

Should a business buy rechargeable or disposable fire extinguishers?

Rechargeable. A metal-valve unit can be maintained, recharged after use and tested for years; a disposable unit must be replaced after any use.

Do new fire extinguishers come with a California tag?

Every new unit we install gets an SOS State Fire Marshal tag, dated and marked as a new extinguisher, and goes on your building's record. Its first annual maintenance is due a year later.

How many square feet does one fire extinguisher cover?

It depends on its rating and the hazard. In a light-hazard area each "A" of rating covers 3,000 sq ft, so a 2-A extinguisher covers 6,000 sq ft. No single extinguisher counts for more than 11,250 sq ft, and nobody may be more than 75 feet of travel from one (California Fire Code Table 906.3(1)).
