The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) serves 23 Orange County cities and the unincorporated county; Anaheim, Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach, Newport Beach and several other cities have their own fire departments. California Title 19 requires annual extinguisher maintenance, with an itemized invoice for the work and parts. In a commercial kitchen, OCFA Guideline D-02 calls for a Class K extinguisher within 30 feet of the cooking equipment, with a placard reminding staff to activate the hood system before using it.

OCFA Guideline D-02 requires hood suppression systems to be serviced at least every six months and after any activation, with fusible links replaced every year and the wet chemical system hydrostatically tested at least every 12 years. Changing the cooking media, or moving or replacing appliances under the hood, needs new plans submitted to OCFA. Set up an appointment with SOS Fire Services after 20 plus years with another company who didn't show up for numerous appointments over the years. I'm glad I changed to SOS. They are friendly and very professional, everything they promised they did. They even showed up before our appointment time and gave me a courtesy call that they have arrived.

How often do fire extinguishers need service in Orange County?

Every year, and also after any use, when an inspection shows a problem, or when a hydrostatic test is due; a test due in the same calendar year is done at the annual service (California Title 19, Section 575.1). The licensed company must give you an itemized invoice of the work and parts, and service cannot be performed more than 30 days before the due date unless you approve it in writing.

How often must a restaurant exhaust system be inspected where OCFA is the fire authority?

OCFA Guideline D-02 sets the minimum by type of cooking: every 3 months for high-volume operations such as 24-hour cooking, charbroiling or wok cooking; every 12 months for low-volume operations such as places of worship, seasonal businesses and senior centers; every month with solid fuel cooking appliances; and every 6 months for all other cooking operations. Grease found during an inspection must be cleaned.
