The challenge
The client's property insurer required documented fire extinguisher coverage that meets NFPA 10, OSHA 1910.157 and the local fire code. The building combines offices and break rooms with high-pile storage racks, loading docks and fork-truck charging stations, and each of these needs a different level of protection.
What we did
We measured square footage, travel distances, ceiling heights and the rack layout, and noted the hazards: combustible pallets, electrical panels, loading docks and fork-truck charging stations.
5 lb ABC units for offices, break rooms and low-density walkways. 10 lb ABC units for the main warehouse floor, high-pile storage bays, loading docks and areas near heavy machinery.
Heavy-duty brackets at NFPA 10 mounting heights along the main travel routes, with a wall sign and an overhead marker above every station so each unit can be seen down the long aisles.
Every unit was inspected, pressurized and given a current annual service tag. The client received an itemized report listing each unit's location, type, size, serial number and installation date, and a written compliance statement for the insurer.
Results
The documentation satisfied the carrier's fire safety requirement, with no policy delay or surcharge.
