The challenge

What the Client Needed

The Kitchen Knight II is fully mechanical: a tensioned cable holds the NMCH3 control head ready, fusible links in the hood let it go in a fire, and a linkage closes the gas valve. Each part has to be tested every six months, and the blow-off caps on the nozzles keep grease out of the piping.

What we did

How the Job Was Done

  1. Disarm the control head

The NMCH3 control head was disarmed so nothing could discharge during testing.

  2. Cylinder and control head

The PCL-300 cylinder's gauge and bracket, the microswitches and the trip mechanism were inspected.

  3. Nozzles and detection line

Every hood and plenum nozzle was checked for a clear orifice and correct aim, and missing and worn blow-off caps were replaced. The detection cable and fusible links in the hood were inspected, and the control head's trip tested under simulated release.

  4. Gas valve and manual release

A simulated trip confirmed the gas valve closes. The manual pull station cable tension and seal were checked, and the Class K extinguisher inspected and tagged.

  5. Tags

State Fire Marshal fixed-system tags under license C16-976500 went on the cylinder and the pull station.

Results

The Outcome

  • Semi-annual service on file

Tested and tagged under NFPA 17A and NFPA 96.

  • Gas shut-off tested

The valve closes when the control head trips.

  • Done outside service hours

The kitchen did not have to close for the work.
